1. The Juke Box
- choice of single discs + choice by pushing big buttons
- 1st attempt at play-list or compilation
- also share your taste in music with others (by imposing your own taste = music profile)
- nothing new in on line stuff really
- things are smaller, digital
- you gain privacy; you loose the social sharing of the juke-box users.
2. The disc player
- automatic disc changer, with 45s and then 33s
- the user decides the order beforehand and makes its own play list
- very popular in parties
3. The tape recorder: the compilation principle
- make my own choice in my order to listen to, when I want
- exchange of tapes with friends to form "shared" resources (social aspect)
4.The Walkman - compact audio-cassette or mini-cassette.
5. The CD player - the portable CD player - CD walkman
- the love affair with the disc continues
- compilations are easy: you can burn your own choice of music
- you can create a playlist by programming it
- you can even burn dozens of MP3 files
- CD in 25 years old in Sept 2007
7. MP3 players and Ipods
Excellent concept which integrates the idea of : portable juke box + compilation + play list with programming
Bad ideas
- all your music is stored on the device: you can loose all in one go
- the music tracks or albums must be downloaded to PC 1st and then synchronised with player
- if library on PC is lost, it's not always possible to copy from your MP3 player back to PC
- downloading means service providers:
they all have different payments, different systems and it's difficult to cancel your account
- at the moment, it works very badly and is a total mess
Better ideas
- store music on memory card:
- memory card could be played in MP3, in PCs, in home systems, in car systems, everywhere "digital"; in fact on anything with a slot for memory cards
- new mobile phones are also MP3 players:- some with direct downloading function: see Nokia and AppleiPod Touch
- batteries should be removable and rechargeable with outside charger
- all on-line music stores for Europe should be regulated by the EU and be standardised:
- use the same standard access to download ;
- work with the same type of payment;
- accept all credit cards from all EU countries
